Vertical Limit saved Chris O’Donnell’s acting career from collapsing

We know Chris O’Donnell today based on his string of well-acclaimed projects, the notable of which is his role of agent G. Callen in NCIS: Los Angeles. But long before this, he was facing a really dark time in the late 1990s and his acting career was almost on the verge of a collapse.

He hit a rough patch when a number of his projects, such as The Chamber, Batman & Robin and The Bachelor, to name a few, failed miserably at the box office. After which he found it very difficult to land roles that could restore his credibility. While this was different, everything changed in 2000 when he got on board Vertical Limit.

This movie was not only a massive hit but it also earned a staggering $215 million globally via Box Office Mojo. Apart from this, the thriller also took away his soft actor persona and presented him in a role that tested his physical capacity. But filming the movie had its own set of challenges as the actor had a huge fear of heights. And it also required him to perform several of his own stunts.

Even the director of the movie Martin acknowledged the risk the actor was taking in such a demanding role. He added via Rolling Stone that “Chris has a reputation for being soft” and continued, “But he stepped up to the mark on this one. He looks great.”

This zeal and commitment paid off, and not only did it earn millions on the box office, but also managed to bring Chris O’Donnell’s career back on track.

Apart from his acting duties, Chris O’Donnell is also a loving husband and father to his five kids. To the surprise of many, the actor and his wife Caroline Fentress have been married for over two decades, having tied the knot in 1997.

Interestingly, the duo met for the first time in the early 90s when he met Fentress who also happened to be the younger sister of one of his friends. Given that a friend was involved, he took three years to ask him whether he could take his sister out on a date or not.

This was the exact moment which marked the beginning of their romance and lifelong partnership. The duo got married when he was just 26 years old. He added in an interview via Redbook Magazine that “I was in the right place earlier than I thought.” O’Donnell just couldn’t imagine life without her and so they got married and two decades later they are still stronger than ever.

You can rent Vertical Limit on Apple TV.
