As the episode opened, Kay Adams led the show in a t-shirt bearing her nickname for the star, Colon Nolan, while the birthday girl was kept under lock and key in her dressing room.

Being guided onto the set by her co-stars Jane Moore and Judi Lover Coleen was left in tears when it was revealed the front row was filled with her loved ones – including children Shane, Jake and Ciara, as well as their respective partners.

Initially shocked and standing stunned, confetti cannons burst over the star, with Coleen weeping as she hugged those who had come down for the surprise.

She then took to the stage and struggled to get herself composed, weeping over the touching sentiment and bursting into tears over several surprises.

This included her sister Maureen dropping in with a cake, despite her working on stage in Ireland at the moment for Menopause: The Musical.

Maureen also started weeping, saying that Coleen was “amazing” as a sister and declaring: “If you don’t love Coleen it says a lot about you, not about her.”

Across the episode, Coleen was treated to messages from the absent members of the Loose Women team, including Pete Wicks, Ruth Langsford, Nadia Sawalha, Linda Robson and Shirley Ballas.

Her brothers, Tommy and Brian, also made a rare appearance, having been behind-the-scenes thanks to their popstar sisters during the 80s.

Coleen declared them “the funniest, best brothers ever” before crying again, with Tommy joking they weren’t famous because “they were the wrong sex to be in the Nolan Sisters”.

Reflecting on her landmark birthday, Coleen said: “I feel great about turning 60. I still believe that age is the number, and in my head, I’m 21/22. In my body, I’m 70, but we’ll ignore that.

“So physically, I’m feeling it a bit, but honestly, mentally, I feel great.”

“I feel a little bit scared, because I don’t know, I guess, well, in life, not just the industry we’re in, but in life, you know, a woman turning 60 makes you scared to death that all of a sudden you’re going to be invisible, and people don’t want to work with you and go ‘well she’s 60, we need someone younger’. And it does happen. It still happens, no matter how much we’ve changed.

“That scares me a little bit, but I’m determined to push forward and go, you’re wrong, and I’m going to prove you wrong.”

She also reflected on her family hardship, including the deaths of her beloved sister Linda, who passed from cancer in January this year, Bernie, who died from cancer in 2012.

Her sister Anne has also been battling cancer.

Brenda Edwards ended the emotional episode with a performance of Lean On Me in Coleen’s honour, changing some of the verse lyrics, telling Coleen she can “call on her”.

Loose Women airs weekdays at 12.30pm on ITV.
