Tom Selleck Has New Project in ‘Development’ After ‘Blue Bloods’ Cancellation and Speculation

Tom Selleck is moving on from Blue Bloods after the show’s cancellation following 14 seasons on CBS.

According to the actor’s IMDb page, he has a new project in the works – an untitled Jesse Stone movie. The film is listed as “in development.”

The description says, “Plot unknown. The next installment of the Jesse Stone franchise.”

Tom, 80, previously teased that he was looking to make a return to the Jesse Stone franchise upon Blue Bloods ending. The Magnum, P.I. alum was asked about whether or not there was a Jesse Stone movie in the works during a December 2024 interview with Parade.

“I haven’t worked on it yet. It would be an interesting challenge because Jesse is older now. There’ve been quite a few years between shows,” the television icon told the outlet at the time. “That doesn’t mean he isn’t a viable character. Everywhere I go one of the things I get asked is, ‘When can I see another Jesse Stone?’”

Tom also said that he wasn’t interested in doing a Blue Bloods spinoff where his character, Frank Reagan, would retire. Instead, he was more interested in bringing Jesse Stone back to life.

“I’m open to suggestions because I love Frank Reagan, but nobody’s really asked. I don’t see him retiring and going off somewhere,” Tom confessed. “If he goes off to a small town, I’d rather do more Jesse Stone movies.”

He also opened up about making another Jesse Stone movie ahead of the Blue Bloods series finale.

“It looks like now I might have to write [a script for another movie.] It wouldn’t be a final one because everybody loves it,” the Michigan native told TV Insider in October 2024 of potentially tackling another Jesse Stone film. “Jesse is a great character, and it would be fascinating to find out where he is quite a few years later. But I need to regroup; I don’t know what’s next, but assuming the phone doesn’t stop ringing, I’m going to keep working.”

Tom Selleck Has 1st New Project in Development After Blue Bloods

Tom first starred in Jesse Stone: Stone Cold in 2005, playing the titular character based on the Robert B. Parker novels. He has since appeared in eight more films in the franchise, with the most recent one being Jesse Stone: Lost in Paradise in 2015.

“If Blue Bloods doesn’t [get uncancelled], there is room for a Jesse Stone because I’ve written them, as you know,” he told Parade in May 2024. “I love Jesse. And he’d be different. He’s older. It’s been a while since the last one. That’s a fun thing to deal with. Either way, I want to work. But we’re in the middle of Blue Bloods; I’m shooting right now.”

After CBS aired the series finale of Blue Bloods in December 2024, an expansion of the show was announced under the working title Boston Blue. The new series will star Donnie Wahlberg and is set in Boston. It has not yet been announced if any of the original Blue Bloods cast members will appear alongside Donnie, 55, in the new show, however, an insider told Closer that Tom was interested in making an appearance.

“Tom’s been pretty vocal when it comes to his feelings about the network ending Blue Bloods,” an insider told Closer in February. “He did not want to say goodbye to that role, so naturally he’s very open to coming back and doing cameos on Donnie’s show.”

The insider said that Tom and Donnie are still very close after sharing the screen together on Blue Bloods for 14 seasons.

“They are still very close, over the nearly 15 years they worked together they developed such a fantastic relationship,” the insider added. “They’re genuine friends, in a lot of ways they grew to be like family, that’s how bonded they were.”
