‘Cannot imagine the pain’ – Heartbreaking tributes for man hit by bus in Galway as first picture of victim emerges

DEVASTATING tributes have been paid to a pedestrian who was tragically killed after being hit by a bus in Galway.

Dermot Geoghegan, aged in his 50s, was struck by a bus on the N83 (formerly the N17) at Claregalway, Co Galway on Friday.

Gardai and emergency services raced to the scene after the alarm was raised but sadly, Dermot was pronounced dead at the scene.

Dermot’s death notice remembers him as the “dearly beloved husband of Meritta” and “much loved father of Bridget, Oisín and Moya.”

The dad-of-three’s funeral mass is expected to take place on Wednesday, March 12 for an 11am service at the hurch of the Annunciation, Clarinbridge.

The ceremony will be followed by a burial in a local cemetery.

‘A GENTLEMAN’

Tributes have been flooding in online for the “gentle soul” since the news of his passing emerged.

One friend said: “Dear Meritta and the family, I am deeply sorry to hear of Dermot’s passing.

“I cannot imagine the pain you are feeling, please accept my deepest sympathy.

“My thoughts and prayers are with you. May his kind and gentle soul rest in peace.”

Another friend said: “To Meritta and family, Sorry to hear of Dermot’s passing.

“He was a lovely person and I’ll miss the chats with him about hurling and Liverpool. A gentleman.”

‘FULL OF HUMOUR’

A third friend added: “I was completely shocked and really upset to hear about your husband Dermot and father of your three wonderful children’s sudden unexpected death.

“I rarely passed your business that he wasn’t outside cleaning windows and sweeping in order to make sure that the business you built up over the years looked in pristine condition.

“May he now rest in eternal peace. May you and children find strength and courage to honour his memory.”

Another added: “Deepest sympathy to you Meritta Bridget Oisin Moya on the sudden passing of Dermot.

“Also to his mum Mary and his brothers and sister Mary I send my condolence.

“He was always full of humour and a friendly chat. May he Rest in Peace.”

GARDA APPEAL

Investigators are appealing for any witnesses to this collision to come forward.

A spokesperson said: “Gardai are appealing for witnesses following a fatal road traffic collision on the N83 (formerly the N17) at Claregalway, Co. Galway today, Friday, 7th March, 2025.

“The collision between a pedestrian and a bus occurred at approximately 2:10pm.

“The pedestrian, a male aged in his 50s, was pronounced dead at the scene.

“A technical examination of the scene has been conducted by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators and the road has fully reopened.

“Investigating Gardai are appealing for any witnesses to this collision to come forward.

“Any road users who were on the N83 at Cahergowan, Claregalway, between 1:50pm and 2:20pm on Friday 7th March and may have camera footage (including dash-cam) are asked to make this footage available to Gardai.

“Anyone with any information is asked to contact Oranmore Garda Station on 091 388030, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda station.”
