Call of Duty Reportedly Planning to Ditch Warzone 3 Under One Condition

It’s not surprising that Call of Duty: Warzone is in a state of ruin right now, and with leaks of the new Warzone to be released in 2026, things are looking not that great for Activision. Although there have been speculations of the new Warzone title releasing with a brand new engine, another report suggests that Warzone 3 might be cancelled.

These speculations concur that Warzone 3’s cancellation is dependent on one crucial aspect, and that is if Verdansk fails to retain the original player base of Call of Duty. Let’s delve deeper into the topic and find out more about these rumors.

Call of Duty has been in a crucial state for a while now, and since the release of their latest game, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 has lost around 47% of its entire player base. While the actual reason is much deeper than what meets the eye, in a general sense, CoD is just bad right now with its server issues, microtransactions, prevalent cheating problem, and much more.

Last Monday, a very reputable Call of Duty insider, @TheGhostOfHope, revealed on X (formerly Twitter) that Activision is willing to cancel Warzone 3 if Verdansk fails to retain players in the game. Verdansk has been a fan-favourite map since it was first released back in 2021, and it was removed afterward because of a new battle arena called Caldera.

Caldera has been a huge failure for Call of Duty players since it was released, and after the majority of the fan base requested Verdansk, Activision finally listened. In August 2024, they confirmed that Verdansk will officially return to CoD in 2025 with some pretty major changes, and fans couldn’t have been more ecstatic.

With Activision losing players each day, this inclusion of the old map puts a huge amount of pressure on Activision, hence the rumor of Warzone 3 being canceled.

TheGhostOfHope was not just the bearer of bad news, in his post, he also mentioned how the upcoming game in 2026 will bring in some positive changes. The leaker mentions that the new game will finally stop supporting old-gen consoles and that the game will be produced in an entirely new engine that will fix issues like visual clutter.

Will Activision really cancel Warzone 3 because of Verdansk?

Call of Duty is in a bad position right now, and Activision is not bold to assume that Verdansk will be the string of hope that can save the entire franchise. People love the original map, it gives them a sense of nostalgia from 2020 when they fell in love with the battle royale. However, we are still uncertain whether players will love the Verdansk or if the hype will die in a few days.

Although only time can tell whether the game will finally rise from the ashes or not, we are still hopeful that the reintroduction of Verdansk becomes a huge success and we finally get to see Call of Duty: Warzone 3 next year.
