The Los Angeles Lakers and Luka Doncic have been a dynamic duo that many thought would never happen. After the Lakers traded for Doncic close to the NBA trade deadline, they picked up another award as well.
According to ESPN’s Dave McMenamin on X (formerly Twitter), “The Lakers were presented with an Alpha Award for Transaction of the Year across all sports at the Sloan Analytics Conference today for their trade for Luka Doncic,” the tweet reads.
“The Celtics won the same award last year for the Kristaps Porzingis trade en route to their 2024 championship.”
The trade itself shocked the entire NBA universe, including the players involved. Both Doncic and Anthony Davis were shocked about the trade. None of them knew that a move like this was in the works.
However, the Lakers couldn’t have asked for a better trade. They have their new face of the franchise once LeBron James retires. Doncic is a five-time All-NBA player and led the Dallas Mavericks to the 2024 NBA Finals.
On the flip side, Davis took his defensive prowess to Dallas. Unfortunately, though, he played only one game before being injured. His timetable is uncertain, but life for the Lakers looks very promising.
Luka Doncic highlights Lakers midseason award
It’s not often to trade for a superstar, let alone to trade for a superstar midway through the season. Many analysts have said that they’ve never seen a trade of this magnitude take place.
However, Los Angeles is reaping all of the rewards. For instance, since Doncic arrived in the City of Angels, the team is 12-2. They have the best defensive rating in the league, and have a top offense.
As McMenamin’s tweet said, the Celtics won the 2024 championship after trading for Porzingis. Could the Lakers win the title after trading for Doncic?
It might be a stretch but a generational superstar on a team with James could be all they need. The Lakers will take on the Celtics in Saturday’s primetime edition of the NBA on ESPN, and hope to extend the wins to 13 with Doncic playing.
