Sarah Lavin admits ‘I will have to go even quicker’ after storming into European Indoor Championships semi-finals

SARAH LAVIN wants to go even faster in today’s 60m hurdles semi after finishing first in her heat.

The Limerick star beat French European No 1 Laeticia Bapte to clock a season’s best 7.93 at the European Athletics Indoor Championships in Apeldoorn.

Lavin, 30, said: “It was a good run. Huge credit to everyone behind me because I haven’t had the easiest few weeks. It’s testament to the people around you.

“When you’re not feeling your strongest, it’s up to the people who you love to make you feel strong.

“I will have to go quicker in the next round . . . but three-hundredths off my PB here tonight. . . I’m happy. I love championships, I live for it.”

With all eyes on them, there was no medal for Ireland’s mixed 4x400m relay team.

Conor Kelly, 17, Phil Healy, Marcus Lawler and Sharlene Mawdsley finished fifth with home favourites Netherlands taking gold.

Mawdsley did, however, run the fastest leg overall in 49.93.

There was more disappointment in the men’s 1500m heat as Cathal Doyle came home in ninth after an earlier stumble.
