Eiichiro Oda Faces a Problem Like Never Before in 28 Years of Making One Piece: “I’ve faced such a crisis”

Eiichiro Oda has been delivering greatness since 1997 in the form of the most important and legendary Shonen manga of all time. Even though his peers have frequently taken long and uncertain breaks, Oda tried to maintain his chapter release as much as possible.

On top of that, he holds an impeccable record where he releases almost three chapters a month with very minimal gaps. There can be occasional breaks here and there, but it has never been anything too serious.

However, last year, One Piece fans got a scare when Oda suddenly decided to take a break because of his health. This time, the situation also points towards a similar route, but it is not Oda who is sick.

Recently, Oda commented he is facing a shortage in his staff due to them falling unexpectedly sick. Three out of his four regular staff members have taken to illness, and this is the first time the legendary mangaka has faced such a crisis. Apparently, this is how his entire week went.

This is indeed a very grave situation because even though a mangaka is the main person who spearheads the making of a chapter, their staff are the ones who draw most of the backgrounds. They are absolutely essential to the craft, and even one of them quitting or falling sick can hurt the end material.

There is a high chance this is also the reason why, in the recent release of chapter 1142, the Elbaph tree is missing the big sword that we always see stuck inside it.

Fans on Twitter have a mostly humorous reaction towards this unexpected problem, with some even claiming they would never have the audacity to fall sick if they ever worked for Oda himself.

Thankfully, this also shows that they are willing to look past any possible mistakes or missteps that might happen during the release of the next chapters. A short hiatus will also not be criticized heavily, as this is a situation that no one can predict.

It is safe to claim that Oda is the most trustworthy and consistent mangaka when it comes to maintaining the quality of One Piece while releasing chapters at a steady and quick pace. The only notable break that he ever took in his career was when he fell extremely sick.

His relationship with the fandom is so positive that the fans wanted him to go on a longer break, but he definitely refused to do that. Previously, Oda hinted how he does not want to disappoint fans by not drawing for too long. This kind of thinking makes it difficult for him to stop working even when he might need it for his own health.

Eiichiro Oda’s dedication to his fans and work is a testament to why he is unanimously loved. Breaks and hiatuses are nothing new, as Yoshihiro Togashi, the creator of Hunter x Hunter, has taken multiple long breaks due to his health concerns.

As fans, we definitely enjoy all the new chapters because that also keeps the anime running. However, no one would want any updates at the expense of Oda’s health. He should take as much break as possible to come back stronger than ever.
