‘Blue Bloods’ Coexecutive Producer Says It’s ‘Incredibly Sad’ That the Show Ended After 14 Season Run

Blue Bloods coexecutive producer Santiago Quiñones is looking back on the police drama’s nearly 15-year run, sharing that the cast and crew were just as saddened to see the show come to an end.

“It’s not only a great privilege to be able to wrap something that went on for so long, but honestly, it was also incredibly sad,” Santiago told The Credits in an interview published on Tuesday, March 4. “Just as fantastic as it was to have been on it, it was really sad to see my crew, who had become family, go away. It became so real when we finished wrapping the stages and all that was gone.”

Blue Bloods concluded its 14-season run with its last episode airing on CBS on December 13, 2024. The series, which aired from 2010 to 2024, starred Tom Selleck as Frank Reagan, the patriarch of a law enforcement family. Dominating the Friday night timeslot, the show boasted a stellar cast, including Donnie Wahlberg, Bridget Moynahan, Will Estes, Vanessa Ray and Len Cariou.

“I kept saying to myself, ‘We’ll never have those moments back in those places again.’ So it was really hard. And the cast, too, and the writers, it’s ten years of my life,” the producer explained. “I remember when I first started, I was very much like ‘I don’t want to make any friends here’ because I didn’t know how long I’d be there. That’s the way production is.”

Although Blue Bloods won’t be returning for a 15th season, CBS announced on February 18 that a beloved member of the Reagan family will headline a new offshoot, Boston Blue, set in a different city.

“In BOSTON BLUE, a universe expansion of the long-running top drama BLUE BLOODS, Wahlberg will reprise his role as NYPD officer Danny Reagan as he takes a position with Boston PD. Once in Boston, he is paired with detective Lena Peters, the eldest daughter of a prominent law enforcement family,” the press release said.

So far, Donnie, 55, is the only Blue Bloods cast member to be officially confirmed as he reprises his role as Danny Reagan. However, before the announcement was made, many of the original cast members voiced interest in continuing their roles within the franchise.

A source told Closer that Tom, 80, was interested in making a cameo in the new show, which is slated to premiere sometime during the 2025-2026 broadcast season.

“Tom’s been pretty vocal when it comes to his feelings about the network ending Blue Bloods,” the insider said. “He did not want to say goodbye to that role, so naturally he’s very open to coming back and doing cameos on Donnie’s show.”

Tom and Donnie share a timeless friendship and fans would love to see them reunite on screen.

“They are still very close, over the nearly 15 years they worked together they developed such a fantastic relationship,” the source explained. “They’re genuine friends, in a lot of ways they grew to be like family, that’s how bonded they were.”
