Ghana’s economy needs urgent reset – Dr Ishmael Yamson

Chairman of the National Economic Dialogue Planning Committee, Dr Ishmael Yamson, has urged a fundamental reset of Ghana’s economy, warning that persistent corruption and poor governance are jeopardising the country’s future.

Speaking at the National Economic Dialogue in Accra on Monday, March 3, 2025, Dr Yamson expressed concern over Ghana’s worsening economic crisis, attributing it to decades of weak leadership and institutional failures.

“Our journey since independence has not been remarkable. The time has come for a fresh start,” he stated.

He pointed to rising unemployment, a declining manufacturing sector, increasing food imports, and growing frustration among young people as clear signs of economic distress.

Dr Yamson lamented that many young Ghanaians, whom he described as “Generation Hustlers,” have lost faith in political leadership and are looking for opportunities abroad.

“This is not the Ghana our forefathers envisioned. The responsibility to reset this nation rests with the president,” he emphasised.

He praised Ghana’s first president, Dr Kwame Nkrumah, for his vision of economic independence and industrialisation, calling that era Ghana’s “golden age.” However, he noted that the country has since strayed from that path.

Dr Yamson also criticised the political system, accusing leaders of prioritising personal interests over national development.

“Politics today is driven by selfishness, arrogance, and impunity. Corruption is rampant, state institutions are weak, and the economy has been poorly managed,” he remarked.

His call for reform set the tone for the dialogue, which brought together policymakers, economists, and industry leaders to discuss strategies for economic recovery.
