Footage shows a man flipping over the bonnet of the cop car before getting up and moving towards another officer.

Officers later closed in on the man, using both a vehicle and a police dog to attempt to corner him.

However, the police dog was reportedly stabbed during the alleged incident and was taken to a vet for treatment.

A 27-year-old man was taken to hospital for treatment and has since been charged with various offences, including one under the Animal Welfare Act.

The incident has been reported to the Police Investigations and Review Commissioner (PIRC).

Police Scotland tonight said their officers used “specialist tactics” to protect the public and themselves from harm.

They confirmed that a knife was recovered from the scene.

The force identified Police Dog Zeus, a six-year-old Belgian Malinois, as the injured animal and expressed hope for his “speedy recovery.”

Scores of officers were seen in the area on Friday evening, with half a dozen police vehicles parked on the street.

Photos from the scene show numerous armed officers gathered on the road.

The area was locked down as the force continued its investigation into the alleged incident.

The street remains sealed off, with blue tape blocking access to the entrance of the nearby Trinity Cemetery.

A police presence remains at the scene tonight as officers continue their enquiries.

Members of the public with any concerns have been encouraged to speak to officers in the area.

Superintendent Ross Kelly said: “We believe this was an isolated incident, and there is no ongoing risk to the public.

“Our thoughts are with PD Zeus and his handler, and we are hoping for a speedy recovery.

“Police dogs are an important and valuable resource, and attacks on them will not be tolerated.

Our dog branch plays a crucial role in keeping people safe, and we cannot overstate the value these highly skilled animals bring to policing.”
