‘Oldboy’ Director Wants Mickey 17 to Win an Oscar, But It’s Not Bong Joon-ho He’s Talking About

It’s always wholesome to see legendary filmmakers step forward to compliment the work of another artist. Bong Joon-ho’s Mickey 17 also happened to receive high praise, but it wasn’t for the director himself.

Park Chan-wook, the visionary filmmaker behind Oldboy and Decision To Leave, was so enamored by one aspect of the movie that he called for an Oscar. So, what exactly made the film so special for Chan-wook? Let’s dive in!

When Park Chan-wook speaks, the film world listens. After all, he’s the creative mind behind some great movies and is also known to make bold statements. But his endorsement of Mickey 17 has taken things to a whole new level.

Warner Bros. Korea recently shared a post that featured great reviews by Korean directors, but Chan-wook’s words stood out the most. He didn’t just praise the film, but also demanded recognition for its star, Robert Pattinson

He urged the Academy to honor the actor with not one, but two awards, both for the Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor for his dual role in the film. Park’s endorsement highlights just how brilliant Pattinson is in the movie, and he’s already set the stage for an interesting award season.

Robert Pattinson’s stellar performance in Mickey 17 and his references

Robert Pattinson’s journey in Hollywood is commendable, as he fought hard to rid himself of the teenage heartthrob image from Twilight by starring in multiple films that challenged him as an actor. Mickey 17 is another example of his dedication to delivering brilliant performances, and this time around, he even used anime as a reference, as per a Letterboxd clip.

I was definitely getting some references from anime… just in the kind of discordant mood changes. Especially for Mickey 18, you just go from zero to 100 incredibly quickly. I always really like that in anime – when you just suddenly have someone entirely static and suddenly they’re furious out of nowhere. I think I was trying to do some kind of emulation of that.

The fusion of anime influences and Bong Joon-ho’s signature style has created a thrilling cinematic experience. As one of the most anticipated releases of the year, it seems like the sci-fi movie is going to redefine the genre, and Pattinson is at the helm of its success.

Mickey 17 will be released in theatres on March 7, 2025.
