‘Fashionista & good egg’ – Virgin Media unveil League of Ireland cult hero as new pundit in hilarious intro

RODDY Collins was unveiled as Virgin Media’s newest League of Ireland pundit in a manner befitting the well-dressed man.

Host Tommy Martin teed up what the former Bohemians boss will bring to their studio.

He outlined: “Joining us for this one – alongside Keith Treacy in studio – a former player, manager, best-selling author, raconteur, fashionista and all-round good egg…Roddy Collins.”

As Collins stared down the camera listening to such an extravagant description he quipped: “No pressure Tom, keep going!”

Viewers were delighted to see the 64-year-old back on television screens.

Among the replies to Virgin clipping that moment, Currahee praised: “Great to see Rod on, your pundits are actually brilliant.

“Treacy, (Brian) Kerr, Vinny (Perth), the lot. Really good. And Tommy is class too.”

Stevie Griffith added: “Love this from Roddy. Legend.” Similarly, Keith Brazil commented: “Great to have him back on the screen.”

There were also a few amusing one-liners from viewers around Collins’ dress sense.

One person remarked: “Delighted to see Roddy back. Great for Louie Copeland too.”

And finally, Rolo reckoned: “Roddy looks like a mob boss from a Scorsese film which was set in the 70s.”

This week’s televised match-up between Shelbourne and Shamrock Rovers proved an entertaining watch too in spite of the Tolka Park surface still being in poor condition.

In the end it finished 1-1 with the two goals coming in the second and sixteenth minutes.

The main talking point on everyone’s lips afterwards, however, was an Instagram post from Liam Burt about how he felt he’d been shabbily treated by Rovers over the past year or so.

The Scot spent last season on loan to Shels from the Hoops, having joined from Bohemians a year earlier.

He announced last weekend that his contract had been terminated and yesterday posted screenshots on social media of what he said were messages he had sent to the Rovers coaching staff.

In them, he alleged a total lack of communication from Stephen Bradley and his assistant Glenn Cronin and claimed he had been left to organise his own operation, although it is understood the club paid for it.

He also posted a picture of him holding the league trophy.

But Bradley refused to be drawn on the post, saying simply: “We need to say to Liam, best of luck getting back from your injury, focus on your rehab and we wish you the best.”

Asked if he was surprised by the ex-Celtic and Rangers player’s outburst, he said: “Nothing surprises me, in life or football.”

On his side’s display in the Dublin derby, he said: “I really liked the first half, bar the first five minutes. We were really good. We controlled created some good chances

“In the second half we had to show different aspects of our performance on what was a poor pitch and defend.”
