‘Dragon Ball DAIMA’ Singlehandly Ruined Its Carefully Picked Up Reputation Because of an Underwhelming Finale

Don’t get it wrong, the hype was indeed REAL with Dragon Ball DAIMA. After all, it was Akira Toriyama’s last original work that he had fully worked on, and it also fulfilled a lot of long-standing desires the fans wished to see from this franchise.

Everything seemed perfect until the end, we even got to see some of the most epic transformations, with a fresh modern art style and Toriyama’s original touch. Finally, with DAIMA, it felt like Dragon Ball‘s reputation would be back on the board again and Toriyama would knock it out of the park one last time.

But, unfortunately, for several different reasons, it just didn’t quite live up to the expectations at the very end.

Where did DAIMA go wrong that it made the entire finale feel wasted?

Fans are still finding it quite hard to comprehend this one particular thing that Goku casually says in the final episode. He just casually mentions that he’s been holding onto the SSJ4 power all along? It was never supposed to be that straightforward, in fact, even a lengthy explanation could’ve come up short, but what is this?

It feels super anticlimactic, especially after all the hype. And on top of that, as Goku and Vegeta are ridiculously overpowered, those Third Eyes mentioned in the series just seem like a joke at this point. Fans are also surprised Glorio didn’t snag one for himself, just for kicks.

It’s honestly sad to see how the whole DAIMA empire fell in pieces just like that. There were so many ways the series could’ve handled the ending better, even having something simple like a credit line, or having a cameo of Toriyama’s OG “Toribot” or Goku breaking the fourth wall would’ve been perfect. But nothing of that sort happened, and now it just feels like another missed opportunity.

What will the future of the Dragon Ball franchise be, now that DAIMA is over?

From what we know so far, when Dragon Ball Super was released, Toriyama basically gave Toei and Toyotaro a rough script to work with, which is why the manga and anime versions of it are pretty different. But with DAIMA, it is a fact that he had way more hands-on it directly, and even wrote the whole script himself like he did with Super Broly. That’s probably why DAIMA initially felt more authentic.

However, things have changed drastically with this ending. Unlike Super, DAIMA was supposed to be different. From the get-go, it was Toriyama telling his own story, incorporating his own ideas into this series.

So now, one can only take a guess here, that maybe they left DAIMA open-ended on purpose so that they can expand on it later. With the latest news of Dragon Ball Super manga finally returning from its hiatus, maybe it (DAIMA) was all just a setup for the actual series! Super may just wrap up with all the sagas that haven’t made it to the anime yet, until they figure out how to take Goku’s story further. But is that really what fans want, milking it more?

Dragon Ball DAIMA is available to watch on Crunchyroll.
