The Oscars have an image of excellence in the film industry. They are looked at as the absolute pinnacle of success for a contributor on any film, and recognition from them can boost careers for decades. However, in recent years, their reputation has taken quite a hit.

As the ceremonies get longer, the winners get more and more questionable; one cannot help but wonder if the outside world has a big influence on the decisions made. Many have pointed out the lack of representation in the nominations over the past few years, even though other awards have kept up with the times.
With this, recent confessions made by voters for the Academy do not look very good for them.
Dune 2 gets a questionable judgment by the Oscars
Dune 2 was one of the biggest films of 2024. It was a blockbuster hit and easily lived up to the hype and mastery of the original project. Performances were top-tier, the visual effects were seamless, and Denis Villeneuve’s direction was one of the best in his career.

With this, fans were not surprised when the film was nominated by the Oscars for several awards. However, it would seem that the voters for the Academy have no intention of actually giving the film a winning shot. With only a few days left for the ceremony, a few voters for the awards gave an interview with EW, where they gave quite candid thoughts about the nominations for Best Picture, and the subject of the film came up.
What they had to say was naturally very concerning for the entire Academy as a whole. They started by easily confessing that they have not seen several of the nominees for the award and are yet to know what they are even about. These included The Substance, I’m Still Here, and Dune 2. While they do plan on watching the first two films, what they have to say about Villeneuve’s film would naturally upset his fans.
I’m bummed because I haven’t seen The Substance or I’m Still Here yet. The first Dune, I couldn’t get through; I’m not rushing for another three hours of Dune.

They stated that they did not find the first Dune film to be very interesting, claiming it to be unbearable and difficult to sit through. Due to this experience, they do not seem very interested in watching the second part, even though they are professionally required to watch the films they are making decisions about.
The Oscars are losing their prestige
The Oscars are one of the most respected and seriously influential awards of all time, being in the same league as the Grammys, Tony Awards, and Emmys. People work their entire lives just to try to get nominated, and it is one of the highest honors that a person in the film industry can get. Considering how seriously they are taken, it is almost infuriating that the same cannot be said about the voters.

Upon hearing about the Academy voters’ thoughts on Dune 2, fans were very quick to point out exactly this. Some mentioned that the Academy needs to be more careful and selective about who they hire to decide the victors of their awards.
point-blank, if you can’t sit through DUNE, you should not be a member of the academy https://t.co/zEcmZKefgM

You should not be allowed to be an Oscar’s voter if you can’t even be bothered to watch more than 10 movies in a year WHO ARE THEY PICKING FOR THIS

Controversial take: Oscar voters that don’t like watching movies probably shouldn’t allowed to be Oscar voters.

I’m convinced that everyone in Hollywood has Attention Deficit Disorder. Both Dune movies are incredible, and The Brutalist doesn’t feel too long even though it is too long. Both are cinematic masterpieces and are unlike any other movie, yet they couldn’t be bothered to watch…

For years, fans have pointed out that the Academy does not take its responsibility very seriously. Reports that voters haven’t even watched the films they are voting on only reinforce this belief. Naturally, fans are disappointed.
The Oscars will air on March 2, 2025, on Hulu Live TV.
