Ryan ReynoldsDeadpool 2 was a widely successful film and ended up grossing $734 million worldwide (via Box Office Mojo). However, behind the success, the film was responsible for the unfortunate death of a stunt woman, Joi Harris.

Harris was an experienced driver, but Deadpool 2 was her first time performing stunts. The accident took place at the Vancouver set of the film, and an investigation report by British Columbia’s WorkSafeBC found the following (via Deadline):

The site had been cordoned off from general public and traffic by the Vancouver Police Department. The worker had been rehearsing a stunt scene that involved driving a motorcycle, Dictate 939 Hyperstrada, out of the open doors of a building, across a concrete pad and down a ramp that had been built over three stairs and coming to a stop on the stair landing.

As the report reveals, Harris allegedly drove ahead of the fixed stopping point, ultimately leading to her death.

During the first shooting of the scene the stunt driver continued driving beyond the planned stopping spot on the stairway landing, and continued to drive down a second ramp built over the bottom stairs and across the roadway. The motorcycle struck the concrete sidewalk curb, the worker was thrown off the motorcycle and propelled through a plate glass window of a building.

Moreover, as Deadline reported back then in 2017, the crash took place after Harris had already completed five takes, and she was not wearing a helmet during the stunt. It was also rumored that she was ill-qualified for performing stunts but was only hired due to her ethnicity.

Ryan Reynolds was also one of the producers of Deadpool 2 and was slapped with a penalty, along with others, after Joi Harris’ tragic death. As Deadline reported, the producers were fined by TCF Vancouver Productions LTD by WorkSafeBC.

They were slapped with a $289,562 penalty for failing to provide a safe work environment. Furthermore, WorkSafeBC found several violations of the Workers Compensation Act and the Occupational Health and Safety Regulation on the sets of Deadpool 2. Not only did they fail to identify potential hazards and risks, but they also failed to provide adequate supervision to Harris while she was performing the stunt.

Following Joi Harris’ death, 20th Century Fox reportedly settled out of court with her family. While the amount settled was not publically revealed, an attorney for Hariss’ family had revealed to The Hollywood Reporter back then that the studio had been very accommodating and was handling everything responsibly.

Despite the settlement, netizens have brought the case back to the limelight, leading to severe backlash against Ryan Reynolds amid the Blake Lively drama.
