Parliament revives human sexual rights and family values bill

The debate over Ghana’s Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill has resurfaced as proponents of the controversial legislation have reintroduced it to Parliament.

According to Reverend John Ntim Fordjour, Member of Parliament for Assin South, the bill is expected to pass quickly, given the overwhelming support from key stakeholders.

“Myself, Sam George, Hon Bedzrah, Hon Alhassan Tampuli, Hon Abdul Kabiru, Hon Ekow Vincent—we have reintroduced it and so it is to support the speedy passage of the bill so that he can assent to it. It has been admitted.

It has been received and so the processes are going to be set in motion,” he stated in an interview with Citi News on Thursday, February 27.

The bill, which was initially tabled in a previous session of Parliament, has garnered significant backing from traditional leaders, religious institutions, and advocacy groups.

“The chiefs, our imams, our clergymen, and the coalition who supported us are still supporting us strongly,” Ntim Fordjour emphasized, adding that the Speaker of Parliament is also in favor of its passage.

With President John Dramani Mahama now at the helm, the bill’s reintroduction has intensified calls for swift approval.

“It is the same bill, so it is not expected that it is going to delay at all,” Ntim Fordjour said, expressing optimism that it will be expedited through Parliament.
