Lazarus, the upcoming original anime by MAPPA, has gained a lot of traction already pre-debut. The anime has a lot of big names involved, which has convinced fans to add it to their Spring 2025 anime watchlist. Shinichiro Watanabe, the director of Cowboy Bebop, is the director of Lazarus, giving it a huge impetus.
Watanabe has also directed Samurai Champloo, Space Dandy and other popular anime. Since he is also the writer of Lazarus, fans are excited about the series, and for good reason.

The action sequences in Lazarus are designed by Chad Stahelski, the director of the John Wick movie franchise. Anime fanatics already have plenty of expectations from the series since Stahelski is a bona fide genius in the action department. MAPPA seems to have mapped out everything that could potentially pull in large amounts of viewers.
Lazarus might be the perfect watch for Cowboy Bebop fans
Apart from the anime visuals, Lazarus and Cowboy Bebop have a lot more in common than you think. The color gradient used seems to be inspired by the classic film. In fact, the hero of Lazarus is a messy hair guy who is reminiscent of Spike Spiegel from Cowboy Bebop.
Additionally, both Cowboy Bebop and Lazarus are set in the near future. Lazarus is set in the 2050s when a doctor discovered a miracle drug. But after three years, the doctor announced that everyone who took the drug would die soon. Thus, a task force of five agents is dispatched to locate the doctor and create a vaccine.
Cowboy Bebop takes place in the year 2071 after Earth is rendered uninhabitable due to a disaster. As a result, humans have colonized different planets and moons in the Solar System. The plot follows five bounty hunters, just like Lazarus has five main characters. It seems like both series have combined elements of science fiction with their main characters on the hunt for something.
Lazarus anime will debut on April 6, 2025. Cowboy Bebop is available to watch on Hulu.
