Ex-Leeds ace explains why Rangers WON’T be ‘hoodwinked’ into keeping Barry Ferguson long-term no matter how well he does

BARRY FERGUSON has made a winning start to life as interim Rangers manager.

The club’s illustrious midfielder – who inspired the Ibrox side to a come-from-behind win over Kilmarnock – has challenged his players to win every single game until the end of the campaign and asked fans to judge him at the end of the season.

Should he achieve that, the club’s board will indeed have a decision to make about his future but former Leeds star Paul Robinson reckons there’s NO CHANCE of the club’s incoming new ownership group giving him the job on a longer-term basis.

San Francisco 49ers enterprises chief Paraag Marathe – who’s also the Leeds Utd chairman – and US businessman Andrew Cavanagh are poised to complete a deal to control 51% of the shares by the summer.

While Robinson feels that will be the ‘reset’ which he feels the club are long overdue, he has delved into the 49ers experience at Leeds and insists there’s no chance of them going down the same route as Man Utd and handing Ferguson the reins long term like the Old Trafford men did with Ole-Gunnar Solskjaer.

He told Betfred.com: “The 49ers group, you look at the impact they’ve had on the club close to me, Leeds United, and the business structure they’ve brought in, they’re very clever with what they do.

They don’t rush when it comes to appointing a manager and I do believe there’s a slight element of thought that they could get hoodwinked into an Ole Gunnar Solskjaer situation if Ferguson comes in and has a great run in the Europa League and wins a lot of games in the SPL.

“Will they be forced to give him the job? If you look at what they did when appointing Daniel Farke at Leeds, it took them two or three months to appoint him because they have a stringent, rigorous way of finding a manager.

“By having Barry Ferguson there, they have somebody that can fill a short-term gap, but I think with the way the owners are and the way that they’re structured, they’ll look towards the longer-term towards the end of the season.

“I think the biggest thing for Rangers is the takeover. The club needs a reset button pressing and I think there’s been a huge disjoint between the club, the board and the supporters.

“I think the appointment of Barry Ferguson is to address that disjoint. To get somebody in with the status that Barry Ferguson has at Rangers, it’ll reunite the fanbase.

“They’ve got a huge game coming up against Fenerbahce and if you look at the league, they’re 13 points off Celtic and 18 points clear of Aberdeen in third place, so basically the top two is done.

“For them now, it’s about getting as many results as they can between now and the end of the season and making sure Ibrox is packed for that huge game against Fenerbahce.

“They need to show the fans that there’s some light at the end of the tunnel and for me, the takeover is massive for Rangers.”
