SONA2025: Mahama outlines plan to end poultry imports with ‘Nkoko Nkitinkiti’ project

President John Dramani Mahama has unveiled an ambitious plan to eliminate poultry imports and boost local production through the ‘Nkoko Nkitinkiti’ farm-to-table project.

Speaking during his State of the Nation Address on Thursday, February 27, he highlighted the alarming state of Ghana’s poultry industry, revealing that the country currently imports 95% of its poultry needs at an annual cost of over $300 million.

“To reverse this trend, our government plans to revamp the poultry sector by investing in hatcheries, feed mills, processing, and distribution, working toward eliminating poultry imports,” Mahama stated.

The ‘Nkoko Nkitinkiti’ project, he explained, will engage 55,000 households in poultry production, ensuring a steady supply of eggs and fresh chicken for the local market. This initiative is expected to significantly reduce Ghana’s reliance on imported poultry while creating jobs and strengthening the economy.

Mahama reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to making Ghana self-sufficient in poultry production, calling on stakeholders to support the revitalisation efforts.
