Dwayne Johnson Betrayed Roman Reigns and Chose Another Star to Become the Next John Cena of WWE, but Was He Right?

Dwayne Johnson, AKA The Rock, who could talk circles around a wrestling promo, once threw a curveball that has reverberated across the WWE universe. When asked who would be the next superstar to take WWE’s top spot, he initially pointed to Roman Reigns. But hold on—he wasn’t quite done. With a slight pause, Johnson switched gears, pivoting to another star instead. And boy, did that decision leave fans somewhat perplexed.

The Rock once made a bold statement about the future of WWE's top spot.

We’re all familiar with the rivalry between The Rock and Reigns, a relationship that has had its ups and downs. And guess who caught the former’s eye? None other than Drew McIntyre. Is this just The Rock being candid, or does it signify a deeper, underlying shift in the WWE hierarchy?

Let’s take a dive into why The Rock’s choice might have ruffled some feathers, and whether it was the right call.

Why Dwayne Johnson believes Drew McIntyre, not Roman Reigns, is WWE’s next big superstar?

Initially, The Rock mentioned Roman Reigns, his cousin and one of WWE's most dominant champions.

So, there’s this interview in 2019, right? Adam Glyn, a YouTube personality, caught The Rock as he was walking into a building. Casual chat, nothing too grand, until Glyn asked that infamous question: “Who’s the next big WWE star?” Now, you’d expect The Rock, after all these years, to lean towards his cousin Roman Reigns, the man who has ruled the WWE landscape for quite some time now.

But that’s not what happened. After a brief pause, The Rock first mentioned Reigns. But, he quickly shifted gears and declared Drew McIntyre as the ‘next big thing’.

Uh, let’s see… you know, I’m not quite sure. I just know that a lot of guys, obviously, are working very hard. I spent a lot of time with Roman just now—spent the past week with him—and we were talking about everybody who has potential.

Personally, I like Drew McIntyre. I think he’s got a great look, a great build, and especially as he continues to hone in on his craft and connect to the audience—which is always the most important thing.

Just like that, Drew McIntyre, a name that many saw as a longshot, is suddenly in the running for the coveted spot. And to make it even more compelling, McIntyre recently revealed that he had asked The Rock for a “little favor” during the WWE RAW Netflix premiere. The Rock’s working on it, he said (via Wrestlezone).

The Rock’s decision: A strategic play or betrayal?

However, The Rock quickly changed his answer, pivoting to Drew McIntyre.

When Dwayne Johnson picked Drew McIntyre over Roman Reigns, some might have seen it as a strategic move, while others might view it as a betrayal of the very brotherhood that built the WWE. Let’s be honest: Reigns has been a dominant force for years, and he’s carried the weight of the company on his shoulders, not unlike the way others might have done in their prime. So why, then, would The Rock drop Reigns for someone else?

On one hand, Reigns has dominated WWE for years and could very well be the face of the company for the foreseeable future. On the other, McIntyre is a hungry competitor with the tools to break through. The Rock’s decision could end up being a masterstroke, or it could blow up in his face like a botched finisher.

Is this a betrayal? Maybe, maybe not. Perhaps it’s simply a case of The Rock placing his faith in someone who he thinks will elevate WWE to new heights in the long run. Time will tell if Drew McIntyre becomes the next John Cena of WWE, but if The Rock’s prediction holds water, we could be looking at the future face of the company.

We’ll only know in time.

WrestleMania 41 will be a two-night event taking place on April 19 and 20, 2025.
