“They literally used the enlarge tools”: There’s a Special Place in Hell for the Worst ‘Sakamoto Days’ Scene That’s Worse Than Pre Time-Skip One Piece

New day, old Sakamoto Days anime controversy. Ever since Sakamoto Days received its anime debut, fans of the series have been neatly divided into two sections. One faction pinpoints every animation fallacy, while the other just tries to ignore the mistakes and enjoy the comedy.

Unfortunately, Studio TMS Entertainment has made it way too hard for fans to keep ignoring the issues with the series’ animation. Some of the most anticipated battles have been botched, and no one is happy about it.

One Sakamoto Days scene is so amateurish that fans can’t help but point it out

Sakamoto vs. Boiled was one of the most anticipated fights of the anime. After the first few episodes, fans wholeheartedly wished that the studio was saving up the budget for the bigger battles. But it never came to be, instead, Sakamoto vs. Boiled became the first heavily trolled action sequence of the anime.

In this day and age, a good manga-to-anime adaptation means copying the source material as closely as possible. But Sakamoto Days took it to the next level. In fact, the action sequence between Boiled and Sakamoto felt like several colored manga panels flowing one after another, with very little actual animation.

An overuse of still frames, coupled with little to no alteration, made things worse. The original manga is loved for its action choreography, but the anime completely butchers it with as little movement as possible. The stiff movements and too many cuts badly affected the flow of the scene.

One scene in Sakamoto vs. Boiled is a textbook example of lazy animation

One particular sequence in Sakamoto vs. Boiled fight shows the duo flying toward a Ferris Wheel. While it was supposed to be an action-filled scene, it is anything but. One fan even pointed out that the staff might have used a basic enlarging tool to show the duo approaching the Ferris Wheel.

The battle sequence was rife with lack of detail, but the animation shortcut is what sent fans over the edge. The anime tried to compensate for the lack of fluidity by using cartoon lines that denote speed, but they proved to be distracting from the actual choreography.

The cut between Sakamoto and Boiled fighting on the ground and then immediately transitioning to them flying toward the Ferris Wheel seems too abrupt. There was no middle animation or explanation about how this scene happened. It’s almost as if the anime is trying to copy the manga without using any brains in between.

In fact, the animation is so bad that even pre-time skip One Piece fared better than this. And that was over a decade ago when the animation technology was not as advanced.

The Sakamoto Days manga is available to read on Viz Media, and the anime is currently streaming on Crunchyroll.
