Glasgow has been crowned Scotland’s most dangerous city, with shocking crime figures revealed in a damning new report by the Scottish Government.

The Recorded Crime in Scotland review for 2024 paints a grim picture for the nation’s largest city, where the crime rate has soared to a jaw-dropping 830 crimes per 10,000 people—well above the national average of 543.

A staggering 52,476 crimes were reported in Glasgow last year alone, marking a four per cent rise from 2023’s total of 50,687. The figures include a horrifying 12,205 non-sexual violent crimes, such as murder, death by dangerous driving and serious assault, as well as 2,223 sexual offences.

And it doesn’t stop there—Glasgow also racked up 18,975 crimes of dishonesty, including theft, fraud and housebreaking.

Dundee takes the title of Scotland’s second most dangerous area, with a crime rate of 775 per 10,000 residents.

Unlike Glasgow, however, Dundee saw an 11 per cent drop in reported crimes last year, with 11,655 recorded in 2024 compared to 13,101 in 2023.

Among these, 2,760 were non-sexual violent crimes, 466 were sexual offences, and 4,808 were crimes of dishonesty.

The city also logged 1,914 crimes against society, including weapon possession and drugs-related offences.

Edinburgh, Scotland’s capital, isn’t far behind, ranking as the third most dangerous area with a crime rate of 718 per 10,000 people.

The city experienced a nine per cent surge in crime, with a whopping 37,590 offences recorded in 2024.

Among Edinburgh’s figures are 7,268 non-sexual violent crimes, 1,289 sexual offences, 19,060 crimes of dishonesty, and 5,816 crimes against society.

Behind the big three is West Dunbartonshire, with a crime rate of 658 per 10,000, and Aberdeen City, which reported a rate of 627 per 10,000.

The report states: “Statistics on crimes and offences recorded by the police provide a measure of the volume of criminal activity with which the police are faced. Crimes recorded by the police do not reveal the incidence of all crimes committed as not all crimes are reported to the police.”
