A dramatic rescue unfolded on the afternoon of February 22, 2025, when emergency responders were called to save a dog stranded on a ledge 20 feet below the top of Pigeon Cliffs along Highway 36.
At approximately 3:39 p.m., a 9-1-1 call reported the trapped animal, prompting the Susan River Fire Protection District and CalFire to respond with multiple units. However, after assessing the scene, crews determined they did not have the necessary equipment to safely conduct a rescue. A request was made to the Susanville City Fire Department, which responded with additional personnel and specialized rescue equipment.
Firefighters devised a rope system to lower a rescuer down to the dog. Once secured in a rescue device, the dog and firefighter were safely lowered to the bottom of the cliff. The Lassen County Sheriff’s Department facilitated after-hours contact with Lassen Veterinary Hospital, where the dog was evaluated and found to be uninjured before being transferred to the Lassen County Animal Shelter.
The Susanville City Fire Department extended its gratitude to all agencies involved, including Susan River Fire Protection District, CalFire, and the Lassen County Sheriff’s Department, for their coordination and teamwork in the successful rescue.
