Chelsea old guard tip ex-team-mate as new contender for Rangers manager job – but it’s not Frank Lampard

FRANK LAMPARD came close to landing the Rangers job when Philippe Clement was appointed.

Now THREE of his former team-mates reckon the Gers should be looking at their star-studded Stamford Bridge squad again.

Carlton Cole, Joe Cole and Wayne Bridge discussed the vacancy on The Dressing Room podcast

Joe Cole, Carlton Cole and Wayne Bridge had halcyon days in west London.

The Blues enjoyed mid-noughties success during the first coming of Jose Mourinho with captain John Terry lifting the Premier League title twice and Frank Lampard scoring from midfield.

And the trio reckon there was a future Gers gaffer amongst them.

But not Lampard – now in charge at Coventry City.

And not his old pal John Terry either – most recently coach at Leicester.

Instead the trio have pulled another name out of the blue – not widely linked with the job. At least, not so far.

Lampard and Kevin Muscat have been mentioned – as previous candidates – so too has out of work ex-bosses Steven Gerrard and Gio van Bronckhorst, plus the likes of Steve Cooper, Sean Dyche and Gary O’Neil.

Sunsport revealed Russell Martin is a name being considered by the Ibrox hierarchy in the immediate aftermath of Philippe Clement‘s sacking.

However the team at The Dressing Room podcast reckon another Englishman is being unfairly over-looked.

Step forward former England first-team coach – Ashley Cole.

Wayne Bridge said: “He was a great player, obviously one of the best but also like he he knows football. He’s read the game.

“You can see the dedication he’s put into the coaching.”

And Joe Cole, who raised his name, explained: “I’m gonna throw him in because, I know he’s got a great job working in England under-21s but Rangers had such a great spell with Stevie G – another ex-England legend.

“I can see Coley going to that job.

” I worked with him doing a bit of media in foreign country. We were sitting with an afternoon off on the sun beds lounging at the pool.

“We ordered a cup of drinks, laughing and I thought ‘this is all good, just watching the world go by in 90 degrees.

“But he just gets out his laptop and he’s showing me throw-ins! That’s dedication. I love him. That would be perfect for him.”

Gerrard leads the permanent betting market at 7/1 alongside Russell Martin.

Interim boss Barry Ferguson is next, followed by David Wagner (10/1), Derek McInnes (12/1), Sean Dyche and Jesse Marsch (both 16/1).
