It’s Obvious Who Was ‘Castlevania’ Creators’ Favorite Character Because of the Attention to Detail in Dracula’s First Revival

In almost any story, the creator always has a favorite character they will pay the most attention to, and pour their heart and soul into their arc. For Castlevania, it’s quite clear who it is. Alucard, one of the protagonists of the series, has secured that bias for Sam and Adam Deats.

From Alucard’s character arc to the attention to detail in his storyline, the Deats brothers love him and who can blame them? Castlevania is full of complex, nuanced people, but none with more brimming potential than Alucard.

For most of Castlevania, the dhampir’s complicated and tragic relationship with his parents was the center of his arc. He was forced to kill Dracula and witnessed Lisa’s horrific execution. When he had to face that tragedy once again, the Deats brothers made sure we knew how Alucard felt.

Season 4 had to pour salt on the wound by making Alucard face his parents’ death again

In Season 4 of Castlevania, Saint Germain uses the Rebis to resurrect Dracula and Lisa from Hell. He had a change of mind when he learned he was being manipulated and asked Trevor to destroy it. This meant that Alucard had to witness his parents dying again.

No matter how much time had passed or how bad their relationship was, this would’ve been difficult for anyone to see again, much less a freshly traumatized Alucard.

Castlevania fans noticed that during the scene where Trevor destroys the Rebis in Season 4, Alucard closed his eyes. He did not want to witness them dying all over again. Adding to it, when the Rebis explodes, it shows Lisa and Dracula’s faces in the smoke.

These subtle but devastating details show how incredible the creators of Castlevania are with the animation and how much love they poured into Alucard’s character. This also meant more trauma for the dhampir. Fans reacted to this detail in the only way they knew.

So not only is Alucard the favorite of the creators but also the fans. The audience could feel his pain. They made it palpable through such tiny details, thanks to the brilliant animation and writing of his character.

Netflix’s Castlevania fleshes out Alucard more than the video games

In the original video games, Alucard is much more cunning and pessimistic. While he is rightfully so, the Netflix counterpart offers a more tragic perspective. His loneliness is depicted realistically rather than in a typical brooding vampire.

His relationship with his cruel father isn’t so cut and dry since Castlevania also fleshed out Dracula. His last words to Alucard cut deep for him (and the audience). The immense guilt he carries is heavy and the series just kept giving him more trauma.

It’s thanks to the Deats brothers that we see this side of Alucard. They offered a new portrayal of him: a more vulnerable one that defies what we know about gothic vampires.

Castlevania is available on Netflix.
