George R.R. Martin: The Winds of Winter Will Begin With “Two enormous battles”, Bring Back a Powerful Faction From Outside Westeros

It’s been more than a decade since George R.R. Martin started writing The Winds of Winter, and seeing that he’s still far from finished, all fans could do is revisit his previous interviews and from there, come up with our own speculation as to how the upcoming novel will begin its story.

It’s a good thing that he’s done several of these in the past, sharing bits and pieces of what we could expect from his sixth novel. He hasn’t been revealing enough information these days and he’s only giving us tidbits of updates about his own progress, so we might as well look back on what he said more than a decade ago.

George R.R. Martin already gave clues for the beginning of The Winds of Winter

Game of Thrones was still airing when George R.R. Martin gave an exciting update about The Winds of Winter. At the time, he had written a quarter of the book and hoped to publish it before the release of Season 6.

He once spoke with Entertainment Weekly to give fans a hint on what they could expect from the sixth novel installment. “I think we’re gonna start out with a big smash with the two enormous battles,” he said. The author did not mention which battles he’s referring to, but in his conversation with Smarter Travel, he confirmed it’s “the battle in the ice and the battle at Meereen.”

He also hinted that we’re going to have more deaths, more betrayals, and more marriages—quite the norm in Westeros, we could say. What’s even more exciting was that he teased the return of the Dothraki in a big way.

Following the events at the end of A Dance With Dragons, it is very apparent that the nomadic band of horse lords will appear again after Jhaqo’s khalasar finds Daenerys Targaryen and Drogon in the Dothraki sea. The writer has also hinted that the bloodrider Mago would play a major role in The Winds of Winter, so it’s quite common sense that the Dothraki will take the spotlight again.

Moreover, Martin noted that so much action will be happening at The Wall, and on another occasion, he confirmed that we will be seeing more of the Others in the upcoming book.

Of course, it’s been more than a decade since Martin revealed this information, and it’s possible that he has changed his mind over time or cultivated the storylines so much that they have evolved from the ideas he originally presented.

It’s unfortunate that we haven’t had new details about the plot of The Winds of Winter as Martin struggled to focus on his writing. He had been busy with several projects, such as the prequel series House of the Dragon and the upcoming spinoff A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, leaving no time for making new writing progress.
