“Buggy would have executed him”: 3 Times Luffy Would Have Died in One Piece Without a Plot Armor

Throughout One Piece, Luffy isn’t exactly known for being careful and cautious. Ever since the Romance Dawn Arc, the young boy has always been reckless or involved in dangerous situations that could’ve cost him his life. If Shanks hadn’t saved him from the Sea King, Luffy would have died.

One Piece fans and characters alike know Luffy isn’t the sharpest tool in the shed. He’s too trusting for his own good, though his instincts are surprisingly right sometimes. He also ignores the blatant danger and just goes for it. While it does make for great comedy, it’s a miracle he’s alive.

After he grew up and started his true journey as a pirate, the real danger began. Luffy was no longer in Foosha Village and faced enemies with powers he never knew existed. He did adapt and survive but there were several moments in One Piece where he definitely should have died.

Buggy was determined to kill Luffy in the Loguetown Arc

One Piece was barely a few arcs in and Luffy had already made several mortal enemies. Although he would barely remember their names, they held strong grudges. Buggy and Alvida allied to take him down. They, however, didn’t even have to try since the young pirate decided to do something stupid.

During the Loguetown Arc, Luffy foolishly got on Gol D. Roger’s execution platform. Buggy’s crew then forced the block onto his neck.

Buggy had full intention of killing the young pirate. Even fans were convinced he would have.

To his displeasure, the Straw Hat captain was simply smiling. However, his plot armor literally struck him. Lightning destroyed the platform just as Buggy was about to kill him. Most people believe Dragon did it to save him, just as he did later in the arc.

Luffy should’ve never made it out of Impel Down

This is one of the rare moments Luffy heeded someone’s warning and had to retreat. However, Magellan’s overwhelming poisoning powers got the best of him anyway. Even after a lot of adapting and help from Bon Clay, it wasn’t enough to damage Magellan or get away from him.

This is the first time Luffy has faced a devastating loss with very little chance of survival. Without Emporio Ivankov and Inazuma, he would have died. It’s incredible what he would do for Ace, having the will to keep going and fighting the way he did at Marineford while still recovering.

If not for Gear 5, Kaido would’ve won easily

Kaido is the Strongest Creature in the World in One Piece for a reason. Nobody has taken the mantle since his defeat and he’s likely to come back. During the Wano Arc, Luffy actually died fighting him. He was hit by Thunder Bellowing Bagua directly and his pulse had stopped.

Though he was caught off guard, Kaido is undeniably the strongest villain he’s faced so far. The only person possibly stronger than him is Loki and we still don’t know that for a fact. If he hadn’t awakened his Devil Fruit into his Gear 5 form, One Piece would’ve rolled credits right here.

Eiichiro Oda seems to enjoy giving Luffy the best of luck in One Piece. It’s a written fact in the storyline that the young Emperor is very fortunate. However, without the plot armor, there are way too many moments where he could have potentially died.

Luffy’s recklessness will go on well into the Final Saga. Although he’s slightly more cautious and infinitely powerful, more near-death moments are sure to come.
