The Winds of Winter Theory: George R.R. Martin Will Turn a Game of Thrones Side Character the Show Sidelined Into a Greater Threat Than White Walkers

The Winds of Winter is taking way too long to be published, but George R.R. Martin gave us clues about what to expect in the upcoming novel through The Forsaken chapter that he released years ago. It was told from the perspective of Aeron Greyjoy, the brother of Euron Greyjoy.

What we could take from this chapter is how Euron became more menacing than before, and leagues more terrifying than his television counterpart. It’s an understatement to say that the Game of Thrones version was extremely disappointing. He was promising at the beginning of the series, but throughout the course of the story, he ended up becoming the unexpected comic relief.

Euron Greyjoy might become the big bad villain in The Winds of Winter

Euron Greyjoy was portrayed on screen by Pilou Asbæk, a Danish actor who did an excellent job playing the antagonist. The character was actually introduced well, but Game of Thrones lost its grip on him which certainly could not happen in George R.R. Martin’s The Winds of Winter.

One popular theory about the famed king of the Iron Islands suggests that he will become an even greater threat than the White Walkers. This might be a stretch to say, but several hints are pointing to this possibility.

The Forsaken chapter has already revealed that he might be dabbling into some strange form of dark arts, and if he manages to harness this, he could conquer not only the Iron Throne but also possess a power beyond imagination. In simple words, Euron’s eldritch apocalypse theory means that he seeks to control both ice and fire.

Let’s not forget that he seized the legendary dragon horn from Valyria, the Dragonbinder, along with knowledge of forbidden magic. Evidently, using this will give him the power to take control of Daenerys Targaryen’s dragons, and it’s not impossible for him to steal one of these feral creatures.

On a more terrifying note, there is speculation that Euron might bring out the Drowned God, the sea deity worshipped by the Ironborn. Once he gets to tap this level of power, the Crow’s Eye will bring chaos and destruction to Westeros, making him the chief antagonist in Martin’s novels. Remember that the books have not introduced the Night King yet since he was created solely for television, so there’s a huge chance that the aforementioned theories might actually happen.

How will Euron Greyjoy die in the books?

Many fans were unsatisfied with Euron’s death in the show after an altercation with Jaime Lannister. Such an event won’t likely happen in Martin’s upcoming novel given how far the book version is from the show version.

Some believed that he would meet his end by trying to deal with forces beyond his control, but the flip side to this is if he ever succeeds, it would spell doom for everyone. He’s got one of the most exciting arcs in the books, and we’re certainly in for a treat once The Winds of Winter gets released.

Game of Thrones is currently available to watch on Max.
