The food products recalled from Irish stores due to bacteria, plastic or glass fragments – as shoppers urged not to use

A NUMBER of products have been recalled from Irish supermarkets recently due to health concerns – do you have any in your home?

Shoppers are being warned not to eat the impacted products, which are sold in shops across the country.

Recently, a batch of Horgans cheddar cheese was recalled due to the possible presence of Listeria monocytogenes.

The batch has a best before date of 25/05/2025.

This batch of Horgans Irish Smoked Cheddar is being recalled due to the possible presence of Listeria monocytogenes.

Specific batches of various Burren Smokehouse organic hot smoked salmon products are also being recalled due to the possible presence of Listeria monocytogenes.

500g packs with the batch number 429721 of Burren Smokehouse Smoked Irish Organic Salmon Hot Smoked Over Oak with best-before dates of 04/03/2025, 10/03/2025 and 11/03/2025 were impacted.

180g packs of the same salmon were recalled, with best before dates of 05/03/2025, 10/03/2025 and 11/03/2025 and the batch number 52221.

140g packs of Burren Smokehouse Organic Hot smoked over oak with honey, lemon & pepper were recalled, with best before dates 04/03/2025, 05/03/2025, 10/03/2025 and 18/02/2025.

The batch numbers for these were 51721 and 429121.

The FSAI also recalled specific batches of various Old Irish Creamery Cheese cheddar cheese products due to the possible presence of Listeria monocytogenes.

They then added more to the list, which can be viewed here.

And a batch of Spar Old Irish Creamery Cheddar with Chilli was also recalled due to the possible presence of Listeria monocytogenes.

The 150g pack has a best before date of 25/05/2025 and shoppers are being warned not to eat the impacted batch, while a notice will be displayed at the point-of-sale.

From Lidl, two packs of Deluxe cheddar cheese were recalled due to the presence of Listeria monocytogenes.

The 150g packs of Deluxe Walnut Cheddar Cheese Wedge and Deluxe Oak Smoked Cheddar Cheese Wedge, both with the best before date of 11/05/2025 should not be eaten.

INFECTION SYMPTOMS

Symptoms of Listeria monocytogenes infection can include mild flu-like symptoms or gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea.

In rare cases, the infection can be more severe, causing serious complications.

Pregnant women, babies, and people with a weakened immune system, including the elderly, are more prone to the infection.

The incubation period (time between initial infection and first symptoms appearing) is on average 3 weeks but can range between 3 and 70 days. 

Recall notices are displayed at the point of sale, while consumers are being warned not to eat the implicated batch.

Retailers are requested to remove the implicated batch from sale and display recall notices at the point of sale.  

Wholesalers/distributors are being told to contact affected customers and recall the implicated batch, while providing a point-of-sale recall notice to their retailer customers.

Caterers should not use the implicated batch.

BURNING SENSATION

Batches of Alpenfest Style Salted Mini Pretzels Milk Chocolate and Dark Chocolate in Lidl were also recalled, as they may cause a burning sensation in the mouth.

Both 140g packs of Alpenfest Style Salted Mini Pretzels Milk Chocolate and Alpenfest Style Salted Mini Pretzels Dark Chocolate were recalled.

Both have a best before date of 28/02/2025.

Lidl has displayed notices at the point of sale, while consumers are advised not to eat the implicated batch. 

Specific batches of Cape Herb and Spice products have been recalled due to the possible presence of plastic pieces.

Retailers were requested to remove the implicated batches from sale and display recall notices at the point of sale, while wholesalers/distributors are requested to contact their affected customers and recall the implicated batches and provide a point-of-sale recall notice to their retail customers.  

Caterers should not use the implicated batches and customers should not eat the products.

And Heineken is recalling specific 550ml bottles of Newcastle Brown Ale due to the presence of glass fragments.

The implicated products have batch numbers L4321, L4322, L4323, L4324, L4325 and L4326, and the best before date is 30/11/2025.

Customers should not drink the impacted products, while retailers are requested to remove the implicated batches from sale and display recall notices at point-of-sale.  

Wholesalers/distributors are requested to contact their affected customers and recall the implicated batches and provide a point-of-sale recall notice to their retail customers.
