Saint Germain’s Redemption Arc in ‘Castlevania’ Made No Sense Despite His Sacrifice

Castlevania has some iconic villains, and most have selfish motives behind their actions. Dracula is the obvious fan favorite for many reasons, with his tragic backstory making him the most compelling villain in the series. Some villains, however, aren’t so justified in what they’ve done.

Saint Germain, though not classified as a villain in Castlevania, deserves the title of it. The storyline might carve him into a morally gray character but after everything in Seasons 3 and 4, his sacrifice felt hollow and cheap. It wasn’t the convincing redemption arc for Saint Germain the writers thought it was.

The writers of Castlevania possibly wanted him to be a complex anti-hero who would, at the end of it, just be a man acting on love. Saint Germain’s eventual sacrifice was undeserved after the damage he did in his dangerous pursuit of knowledge.

Saint Germain’s love story and sacrifice isn’t a compelling enough plot to get us to like him

At first, Saint Germain is an ally of Trevor and Sypha in Season 3. He might’ve sided with them but he was still incredibly impatient and condescending. He was interesting enough for fans to want to see more of him. However, that quickly changed with Season 4.

Saint Germain revealed his true intentions and personality. While we knew he was pompous, the level of recklessness his obsession with achieving godhood brought was unforgivable. He ended up siding with vampires, led by Varney and didn’t even recognize he was being manipulated.

So why label him as anything but the villain he was? Yes, he showed a sliver of humanity with his lost lover but it felt like a reused version of Dracula’s story. Some villains deserve to be just villains. Saint Germain is as antagonistic as they come. Reddit users seem to agree.

St. Germain is probably the worlds biggest a-hole

Saint Germain’s love for the mysterious lady was nothing compared to Dracula and Lisa. The latter had built a life with her and she was taken from him horrifically. His death and last words were also more tragic. On the other hand, Saint Germain was more of a depraved man than someone truly in love.

Even sacrifice isn’t enough to forgive Saint Germain’s actions in Castlevania

After realizing he was being manipulated by Varney, who was revealed to be Death, Saint Germain sought to right his wrongs. He saves Trevor instead of himself, pushing him into the Infinite Corridor.

Castlevania can write truly complex, nuanced villains but Saint Germain’s story was very disconnected. His potential was completely ruined in Season 4 by making him a senseless, egoistic killer in pursuit of power.

For someone with his level of arrogance and knowledge, Saint Germain sure was played like a fiddle. Reducing him to another pawn in Death’s game felt cheap and underwhelming to his character in Season 3. We hoped for better from his storyline but instead, got yet another villain.

Castlevania is available on Netflix.
