NE-YO Breaks Down How He Explains His Polyamorous Relationships to His Kids

We think it’s safe to say NE-YO is running an incredibly sex-positive household. The “Miss Independent” singer recently sat down with Rickey Smiley for an episode of the Rickey Smiley Morning Show and said that he is open and honest with his kids about his polyamorous relationships.

And if you think that might be a hard conversation for him to have with his seven kids, the singer said it’s really not.

“I answer them. Honestly,” he said, per People. “Again, I’m not lying to nobody, not even my children.”

“It’s like, ‘Hey, this is Daddy’s girlfriend. And so is that, and so is that. And so is that,’” he continued.

It might seem unconventional to some, but the conversations seem pretty straightforward and clear-cut. We love that the “Let Me Love You” singer is so honest with his kids about something that can be seen as so taboo. It must make them feel like they can be honest with their dad and like he would be accepting no matter what kind of relationship(s) they choose to enter down the line. How freeing is that?!

NE-YO shares kids teens Madilyn and Mason with former fiancée Monyetta Shaw-Carter. He then shares Shaffer Chimere Jr., Alexander-Raj, and Isabella with ex-wife Crystal Renay. And then there are his littles, Braiden and Brixton, who he shares with Sade Jenea Bagnerise. From toddlers to teens, NE-YO has a large household, and they all know — at least to some extent — that each of his current partners are involved in the house.

“[I tell them] ‘She gonna make you some cereal. She gonna cook you lunch. And she gonna wash your clothes,’” he explained. “And it’s all good.”

“It’s a family,” he said of his four current partners. “It’s a community. That’s what it’s about.”

In July 2023, NE-YO opened up about fatherhood in an emotional Instagram post.

“I’m a father before I’m anything else,” the Grammy winner said, per Revolt. “Not money, not fame, not even the love of the craft. I do this for them. They are my reason, I’m nowhere near perfect, and that’s OK.”

“My kids love me. And I’d die, kill, steal, whatever to make sure they never need for anything,” he continued. “The best thing I’ve ever done.”

These celebrity LGBTQ+ families are proving that love is love.
