“I wished I didn’t”: Christopher Nolan Will Never Forgive Himself for Ruining Quentin Tarantino’s Best Movie for Himself

Avoiding spoilers today feels almost impossible. If not your friends, the Internet will ruin a film you have been waiting ages to watch and sometimes, it’s just curiosity that kills the cat. Unfortunately for Christopher Nolan, something similar happened while he was striving to make it big in Hollywood. A fan of Quentin Tarantino’s work, Christopher Nolan was excited to see what the renowned filmmaker had up his sleeve after the immense success of Reservoir Dogs (1992).

However, working as an intern at a film company cost him the pleasure he would have gotten from watching Pulp Fiction (1994), had he not read the script beforehand. That is one of the biggest regrets he has as a cinephile.

Christopher Nolan has a fan following like no other. Whether it is a new release or a re-release, you best believe that fans will be seated at the theaters. Thus, the fact that he is a fan of Quentin Tarantino‘s work speaks volumes about just how exceptional the Kill Bill filmmaker is.

Tarantino’s first film, Reservoir Dogs, made it clear that the director didn’t step into the film industry to play. He was here to rule, and he was going to do just that in the coming years. After the fantastic reception of the 1992 crime film, fans wondered what he would come up with next and if it would be on par with Reservoir Dogs. Needless to say, Pulp Fiction exceeded expectations.

Unfortunately for Nolan, who’s a big fan of Reservoir Dogs, his job didn’t allow him to truly experience the magic of Pulp Fiction. As it turns out, being an intern at a film company came with its perks (or rather cons, in this case) that allowed Nolan to get his hands on a film’s script before the release. The 1994 flick was one of them.

Talking to The New York Times about fans who want to know everything about a film before they actually get to watch it, Nolan said,

understand that. I’m of that mindset myself. What I’ve realized over the years is, I want to know the movie, and then as soon as I know it, I wished I didn’t. I was interning at a film company years ago, and I read the script for ‘Pulp Fiction before I saw the movie, and I always regretted it.

Why did he regret reading one of the finest scripts to ever exist? Well, because it ruined the movie-going experience for him, and watching Pulp Fiction after reading the spoilers was just not it.

He said, “I’m a huge ‘Reservoir Dogs’ fan, I was really excited to see [Quentin Tarantino‘s] next film. Reading the script wasn’t the same as seeing the film. And then seeing the film, having read the script, wasn’t the same as seeing the film.” What an unfortunate set of events for a cinema enthusiast like Nolan.

By now, we know that Tarantino plans on making a total of ten films before he retires from filmmaking. He once told Playboy (via Independent) “Usually the worst films in their filmography are those last four at the end … I don’t want that bad, out-of-touch comedy in my filmography.

While he does technically already have 10 films in his portfolio, he considers the two Kill Bill films as one, meaning that there is one more film to go before he pulls the curtains. Needless to say, the entire world is anticipating Tarantino’s final film as we just know that he is going to end with a bang.

As for his next film, there is absolutely no information regarding what to expect. He was actually working on The Movie Critic which was announced all the way back in 2022. Everything was going well and Brad Pitt was also cast for a lead role. However, something didn’t sit right with Tarantino and he ended up scrapping the film. Not shelving it, not postponing it, simply canceling it and erasing it from the face of Earth.

As per Variety, he talked about the film at the Cannes Film Festival, stating,

I can’t tell you guys [anything] until you see the movie. I’m tempted to do some of the character’s monologues right now, but I’m not going to. Maybe if there were less video cameras. You just have to wait and see.

Well, guess we aren’t going to “see” after all. Regardless, we are pretty damn stoked to see what Tarantino is cooking up in his lab. The filmmaker is welcome to take his time and come up with something he can be proud of. No rush!

Pulp Fiction is available to watch on AMC+ (via Prime Video).
