‘There are no words’ – Tributes pour in for ‘gentleman’ killed in Westmeath crash as family confirm funeral details

TRIBUTES have poured in for a man killed in a two-car Westmeath crash as his family confirm the funeral details.

Tom Walsh was sadly pronounced dead at the scene of a crash on the N55 at The Pigeons, between Athlone and Ballymahon yesterday.

The pensioner, from Ballymahon in Co Longford, was driving one of the two cars involved in the collision, and had a male passenger aged in his 80s with him.

He was sadly pronounced dead at the scene, and his body was taken to Tullamore Hospital, where a post-mortem will take place in due course.

Locals said Tom worked with a lot of local farmers and also did some maintenance work at Centre Parcs.

Fine Gael Councillor Paul Ross, who is a former Cathaoirleach of Longford County Council, described Tom as an absolute gentleman.

He said: ”Tom worked on a number of farms around the area and was very well known.

“There is huge shock in the Ballymahon area at this tragedy. We are all thinking of Tom and his friends at this time’’.

The family have since confirmed Tom’s funeral details on RIP.ie, with his remains being reposed in St. Matthew’s Church, Ballymahon, on Sunday evening from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

His death notice reads: “Deeply regretted by his sons Paul, James and Andrew. Their mother Sharon and his brothers and sister Jody, Ned, Dermot, Martin and Mary. Nieces, Nephews, relatives, friends and neighbours.

He will repose in St. Matthew’s Church, Ballymahon this Sunday evening from 5 o’clock until 7 o’clock followed by prayers.

And his funeral mass on will take place on Monday at 11am followed by burial in Kilcommock cemetery.

‘WE ARE ALL HEARTBROKEN’

The family has requested that only flowers from other family members be sent, and their house will remain private at this time.

Tributes have poured in from family and friends across social media.

One person wrote: “Rest in peace Tom, he was the definition of a gentleman.

Another said: “Rest in peace Tom, we are all heartbroken – you will be so missed.”

One mourner added: “There are no words, an absolute gentleman taken far too soon.”

The local supermarket in Ballymahon town wrote: “Our deepest sympathy to all of Tom’s family.

“Tom was a great customer and true gentleman. We will miss him. Rest In Peace Tom.”

And another heartfelt tribute wrote: “I will miss you so much . You are going to be missed beyond words and I know you will get the best bed in heaven. You were always there to help.

“Everyone thinking and praying for you all at this very sad and difficult time Ballymahon’s loss is heaven’s gain.”
