He protects, he attacks, and he sure has everyone’s backs. Sakamoto Days anime lives up to this idea in every sense. There are comedy, action, drama, and slice-of-life elements, which makes it supreme. It is John Wick coded, that’s for sure, but Yuto Suzuki gives our hero his unique flair.
From coupons to click pens, Sakamoto isn’t your usual hitman who needs a gun to protect himself. He proved that you do not need to follow in the footsteps of gunslingers to look cool. You could make do with chopsticks even, but Season 2 needs to take it up a notch, and here’s why.

Now, the first season ended last week, and it was rather underwhelming for most of us. This isn’t what we would call a finale now, would we? But Second Cour is around the corner, and there’s one thing that needs to be done. That is, to make sure the anime doesn’t recreate yet another Marty Stu apocalypse.
Sakamoto Days Preps Up for Cour 2
Sakamoto Days anime finished its first season last week, and it was all a mix of highs and lows. It all started with the news of TMS animating the series, and fans weren’t happy about it. This was a bumpy ride, as Bette Davis would call it, but there were some upsides to it.
On the bright side, the first season had anime-only scenes, which added more volume to the characters’ presence. It was much needed, but there was a huge omission of scenes from the manga, which made it too fast-paced. This did not make sense, especially with Sakamoto’s fight with Boiled.
Not only that, the series cut several fan-favorite moments from the manga which made it inaccurate for the most part. The bus scene where both Sakamoto and Shin wear masks is action-filled but also significant. It highlighted Sakamoto and Aoi’s love for each other.
These moments carry weight, which is something the animators overlooked. It might not seem important, but the minor details are what make the story compelling. To add to that, the original anime scenes, like Lu’s flashback, made her story more gripping and engaging.
But Season 2 means a renewed outlook on the story and characters in every case. The second cour would cover JCC Arc as well as the Deathrow Inmates arc. It is bound to get exciting for fans as they respond to the cour’s key visual on r/anime.
Moreover, the cour would be packed with action, higher stakes, and memorable moments. Fans better buckle up for the upcoming season, provided they don’t take the haphazard approach with this one. It would also mean that Sakamoto isn’t reduced to another Marty Stu rendition.
A legendary hitman or just another Marty Stu?
For starters, Marty Stu is the male counterpart of Mary Sue, to put it simply. It means a character who is overpowered and flawless in more ways than one. Or, in this case, it is the legendary former hitman, Taro Sakamoto. This guy can use a handrail and whip it across and look slick while doing it.

But so far, we’ve only seen the guy tweak his neck and nothing more. Which makes us think, is he even fallible? There isn’t a problem with perfection, but it is boring by the end of the day. And the character becomes unrelatable and unfamiliar.
The future arcs, however, do feature some anti-Marty Stu moments that counter this. But spoilers shall not be thrown any further from this point onward. For now, we can only hope for the best and keep our fingers crossed with this one!
Sakamoto Days is available for streaming on Netflix. The manga is available for reading on Shueisha’s Manga Plus app.
