Like Lies of P: Overture, Avalanche Can Still Salvage Cancelled DLC by Including It in Hogwarts Legacy 2

Lies of P: Overture is proving that expansions don’t always content separate from the base game. The developers at Neowiz have mentioned that the DLC is a part of the original plan for the game and it’s being implemented seamlessly into the base game.

In the same way, Avalanche Software has an opportunity to take a page from Neowiz’s playbook. Warner Bros. canceled a planned DLC for Hogwarts Legacy and it’s left a lot of us disappointed. But it doesn’t have to be that way. The content could still be salvaged by adding it to Hogwarts Legacy 2.

Lies of P: Overture is setting a good example that Warner Bros. should follow

Neowiz’s Lies of P was one of the most successful Soulslike games in recent years. A lot of gamers, including us, praised the game’s take on the Soulslike formula and its dark reinterpretation of Pinocchio. It’s been two years since then and the upcoming Lies of P: Overture DLC aims to build on that foundation. But it won’t just be another add-on.

Neowiz’s approach with the upcoming DLC is an excellent case study of how to handle cut content effectively. Lies of P: Overture is like an extension of the base game rather than a separate thing entirely. Players can access it naturally within the game’s main story without having to finish it first, making it feel like it was always meant to be there.

Overture combined with the base game is going to be the holistic experience of Lies of P – how it was meant to be experienced. Because of that, it’s highly intertwined together, so what I recommend or suggest to the fans would be to take time, experience the base game.

According to game director Ji-won Choi (via Xbox), many of the elements in Overture were originally part of the base game’s vision but had to be cut for release. With the success of the game, all of this is now possible. It seems like this time, Neowiz is delivering a more complete version of the game itself, something that Avalanche Software could learn from.

The canceled Hogwarts Legacy DLC can find a home in the sequel

We recently learned that there was a canceled DLC for Warner Bros. and Avalanche’s Hogwarts Legacy that would’ve had a storyline tied to one of the game’s companions. Instead of shelving the expansion entirely, Avalanche should follow Neowiz’s lead by integrating this content into Hogwarts Legacy 2.

Even though Hogwarts Legacy 2 is still years away, there’s plenty of room for Avalanche to reshape its approach based on these events. Warner Bros. is reportedly doubling down on its biggest franchises, meaning the sequel will be a top priority. There was also the rumor that the game would be live service, but we can heave a sigh of release because that’s quite unlikely.

Another advantage of this is that we won’t feel like we missed out on important content. Lies of P’s developers have noted that Overture completes the original vision of the game. So in a way, that makes it an essential experience for players rather than optional post-launch content.

Avalanche Software can do the same with Hogwarts Legacy 2 by adding the abandoned expansion into the game’s story. This way, players who were excited about the DLC won’t feel like they lost out on something, and new players can experience everything properly without the need for a separate purchase.
