Kaley Cuoco’s Young Sheldon Role Only Happened Because They Needed Someone “Female and kinda s*xy”

Kaley Cuoco’s Young Sheldon cameo wasn’t exactly a carefully crafted character arc. It was more of a last-minute fix. Turns out, the only real requirement for the role was someone female and kinda s*xy, and Cuoco fit the bill.

While it was a fun Easter egg for The Big Bang Theory fans, the reasoning behind her casting might raise a few eyebrows.

Kaley Cuoco secretly voiced Sheldon’s nightmare in Young Sheldon — here’s why

Sheldon and Penny reunited… sort of. Kaley Cuoco made a surprise voice cameo in Young Sheldon, but if you weren’t paying close attention, you probably missed it.

In the Dec. 12 episode, “Teenager Soup and a Little Ball of Fib,” Sheldon had a nightmare about a school swim test. And who taunted him? The bacteria-infested pool itself, voiced by none other than Cuoco.

Series co-creator Steve Molaro admitted it was a no-brainer. He alluded (via TVLine),

That was absolutely the voice of Kaley as pool water…I needed someone to do the voice. I knew I wanted it to be female and kinda sexy, and I said, ‘Well, duh! Kaley is perfect for this.

One call later, Cuoco was in. When Molaro pitched the bizarre role, literally playing pool water, she just laughed and said,

I said, ‘Hey, I have a weird pitch for you: Sheldon has a nightmare, and he has to go to this pool, and he speaks to the pool water. Do you want to be the voice of pool water?’…She just laughed and said, ‘Absolutely, I do.’

But there was a twist. Instead of hyping it up, Cuoco and Molaro agreed to keep it under wraps. He explained,

Sometimes I feel a little weird about things being over-promoted…and as awesome as it was, I don’t know that that should be the kind of thing that appears in promos. [Kaley] wanted to hold it under wraps [as well], so that if you figured it out, that was a little Easter egg for you, so we were all on the same page about that.

They decided to let sharp-eared fans uncover the Easter egg themselves. Cuoco’s cameo marks the first time a Big Bang Theory cast member has crossed over to the spinoff, aside from Jim Parsons, who narrates and produces.

Young Sheldon already paid tribute to its predecessor when Iain Armitage (Sheldon), Lance Barber (George Sr.), and Montana Jordan (Georgie) appeared in a Big Bang flashback.

So, while Penny didn’t exactly pop up, Cuoco still left her mark — this time, as Sheldon’s worst nightmare in liquid form.
