Washington, March 23, 2025 – Despite months of stern warnings, signs emerge that U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration seeks to avoid war with Iran and build trust instead.

Steve Witkoff, Trump’s Middle East envoy, revealed this shift in an interview with American journalist Tucker Carlson, emphasizing diplomacy over conflict with Tehran.
Trump, who since taking office accused Iran of pursuing nuclear weapons and threatened strikes on its facilities, appears to pivot. Analysts previously labeled his Middle East policy chaotic, warning it could destabilize the region further.
Yet, Witkoff insists the administration now prioritizes peace. Weeks ago, Trump sent a letter to Iran’s leadership urging dialogue on its nuclear program—a move Tehran rejected, viewing it as veiled coercion. Witkoff clarified, “That letter wasn’t meant to threaten. It was a diplomatic step to ease tensions.”
In the letter, Trump called himself a “president of peace,” urging talks to sidestep military confrontation. He proposed verifying Iran’s nuclear activities to ensure safety, while offering to help Tehran reclaim its place as a “great nation” despite Western sanctions. Witkoff told the Times of Israel that Trump aims to foster trust, not fighting, even as the U.S. holds a military edge. Secret discussions via intermediaries continue, he added.
Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei struck back, warning that any attack would face a “severe blow” from Tehran. Speaking after Witkoff’s remarks surfaced, Khamenei vowed no concessions.

Iran’s Navy chief, Rear Admiral Shahram Irani, mocked Trump’s threats as “empty,” asserting readiness to crush any aggression. “Enemies must abandon such delusions,” Irani declared.
This sudden U-turn follows Trump’s earlier hardline stance, raising questions about consistency. While Washington signals de-escalation, Tehran remains defiant, setting the stage for a tense standoff—or a fragile chance at peace.
